Jannie Lee Strickland was born on May 12, 1930, in Auburn, Alabama, to Alex and Ada Strickland. She completed her grade school education at: Lee County Training School. Jannie embraced her goal to become a successful and productive adult in society; therefore, she began her teenage employment as a live - in Caretaker. This job gave her an opportunity to travel the United States. Oftentimes, she spoke of her adventures,, and passed on her knowledge of historical sites to her children. Her trip to Coral Gables, Florida was the start of a new chapter in her life. She redirected her career path after she met the love of her life, Eddie James Smith. In 1952, they were united in holy matrimony.
